- Ring wrench for unscrewing the bleed valve.
- Transparent plastic hose with an inner diameter of 6 mm and a container for collecting brake fluid.
- Required amount of brake fluid according to specification.
Note. Do not reuse used brake fluid. Old brake fluid is much darker than fresh.
This makes them easy to distinguish.
Safety note
Brake fluid absorbs moisture through the pores of the brake hoses and the reservoir vent. As a result, during operation, the boiling point of the liquid decreases. If the brakes are heavily loaded, this can even lead to vaporization, which reduces the effectiveness of the brakes.
Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years, preferably in spring. With frequent movement in mountainous areas, the fluid must be changed more often.
At service stations, air from the brake system is usually removed using a special device. However, this can be done without the use of this device. In this case, the brake system is pumped by the brake pedal. This requires the participation of an assistant.
If in the process of removing air from the brake system, the fluid level drops sharply, then air is sucked into the ABS pump. In this case, the removal of air must be carried out at the service station using a special device. When replacing any brake hose, the air from the system must also be removed at the service station. Until this is done, you can not use the car.
Air removal sequence:
- 1. Rear right caliper
- 2. Caliper rear left
- 3. Caliper front right
- 4. Caliper front left
1. Using a blower, remove the brake fluid from the reservoir, leaving a layer of liquid approximately 10 mm thick at the bottom of the reservoir. Do not remove all fluid from the reservoir, otherwise air will enter the brake system.
2. Fill the compensation tank with new brake fluid up to the MAX mark.
3. Carefully, so as not to twist, open the bleed valve. It is recommended to treat the fitting with a rust remover 2 hours before the start of air removal. If the fitting does not open, then the operation to remove air from the brake system should be entrusted to a workshop.
4. On the right rear disc brake caliper, fit a clean, transparent hose over the bleed valve and insert it into a suitable container.
5. Have an assistant depress the brake pedal repeatedly until counterpressure against the pedal is felt. Press the pedal and open the bleed valve. Close the fitting after the brake pedal rests on the floor of the body. Take your foot off the pedal. By repeating this process, pump out approximately 400-500 ml of old brake fluid.
6. Close the union of removal of air and fill in a new brake liquid in the compensation tank.
7. In the same way, pump out the old brake fluid from other calipers or wheel brake cylinders, following the sequence indicated above.
Attention! The drained brake fluid must in any case be clean and free of air bubbles. From each brake caliper, it is necessary to pump out approximately 400-500 cm3 of old brake fluid.
8. Hand over the old brake fluid at a special point for the reception of waste fuels and lubricants.
9. Depress the brake pedal and check for free play. It should not exceed 1/3 of the pedal travel.
10. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid up to the pre-existing level.
11. Screw the cap onto the tank.
Do a reliability check:
- Are the brake lines and hoses secured?
- Are the brake hoses in holders?
- Are the bleed fittings tight?
- Is there sufficient fluid in the system?
12. With the engine running, check the system for leaks. To do this, press the brake pedal about 10 times with a force of 200-300 N (corresponds to 20-30 kg). The brake pedal must not move back. Check all connections for tightness.
13. In conclusion, check the operation of the brakes on a road with light traffic. To do this, you must make at least one strong braking, checking the action of the ABS (a sign of ABS operation is the pulsation of the brake pedal when braking).
Note. Be aware of the traffic following your vehicle. The effect of ABS is best seen on unpaved roads.
Do not dispose of brake fluid with household waste or elsewhere. Local authorities must inform about brake fluid collection points.
