The thermostat is located in a housing on the cylinder head. The ball valve in the thermostat ensures that air is automatically bled from the cooling system when it is filled with coolant.
To remove the thermostat, it is necessary to remove the hose from the housing cover, unscrew the bolts securing the cover and remove it. Remove and check the condition of the O-ring.
The thermostat cannot be repaired and must be replaced if damaged. To check the performance, you can carry out simple tests:
Lower the thermostat on a piece of wire into a container with cold water and fix it.
Attach the thermometer in the same way.
Heat the water in the tank and note the temperature at which the thermostat starts to open, it should be within 87°C. At 105°C the thermostat should be fully open.
During these tests, the pin should move 6...8 mm. If the thermostat fails the test, it must be replaced.
Install a new gasket when installing the thermostat. Check hose clamp. Fill the cooling system with coolant (section 5.1.1).
