Sequence of work
The time shown is 30 min.
1. First brake hard while driving at low speed.
2. Equal in length brake marks from the wheels indicate the simultaneous operation of the brake mechanisms. The check also makes sense on a vehicle with ABS, since the system is not active at speeds below 8 km/h.
3. Carry out the same test with the parking brake. While depressing the pedal, simultaneously pull out and hold the release handle.
4. To test the brakes at high speed, choose a flat road.
5. At a speed of 50 km / h, release the steering wheel (keep your hands ready) and brake gently at first, then abruptly to a complete stop.
6. When you fully press the brake pedal, vibrations from the operation of the ABS system should be felt on it. This is fine.
7. If the car pulls to the left during such braking, one of the right brake mechanisms is faulty. The car pulls in the direction of more effectively braked wheels. See reasons. «Possible malfunctions of the brake system, their causes and remedies».
8. Allow the vehicle to roll freely on a slight incline to make sure the wheels are not blocked.
9. After driving, check the temperature of the wheel by hand. If one of them is hotter than the others, this may indicate brake pads on the caliper or a blocked parking brake.
10. With the vehicle raised, check which wheel has insufficient free play.
11. Turn on the ignition and, on level ground, release the parking brake. Now, in turn, check the performance of the two electrical contacts on the brake fluid reservoir, for which press the rubber cap. At the same time, the signal lamp should light up.
12. It is recommended to check the brakes on the stand every 30,000 km. The settings of the BAS, ASR and ETS systems must be known.
Attention! If you have any doubts about the performance of the brakes, immediately contact the workshop. Follow these guidelines:
- 1. Your safety and the safety of other road users depend on the serviceability of the brake system. Regular inspection of the brake system is the best guarantee of safety.
- 2. It is recommended to remove the wheels from time to time and check the condition of the brake pads. Maintenance of the brake system is not too difficult task. Most brake work requires no more skill than removing a fender or shock absorber.
- 3. Nevertheless, any work should be undertaken only if you are completely confident in your abilities. In case of doubt, it is better to contact the service station.
- 4. Do not repair the ABS unit and system connections yourself. These works, as well as ABS diagnostics, are a task for specialists.
