Examination
1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
2. For the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine crankshaft and check the condition of the chain along the entire length. If the chain makes excessive noise when the engine is running, or if there is large chain end play on the sprocket, the chain must be replaced. If there is wear on the chain rollers, the chain must also be replaced.
Replacement
Attention! When removing the chain, use an emery wheel or vulcanite to cut off the protruding hats of one of the chain links.
Removing the connecting link from the drive chain
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Remove fuel injectors.
3. Remove the radiator fan and shroud.
4. Remove the drive chain tensioner.
5. Using a clean rag, cover the cylinder head and chain in the cover.
6. Using an emery wheel or vulcanite, cut off the protruding heads of one of the chain links at the top of the sprocket.
7. Remove the chain link fixing plate, then remove the chain link from the drive chain (see picture).
8. Remove the rag, being careful not to get chips inside the drive chain cover.
9. Using the new chain link, connect the new drive chain to the old one and rotate the engine clockwise to run the new chain around the sprockets and guides. At the same time, constantly tighten the new chain so that its links are clearly aligned with the camshaft sprocket. Also keep the old chain under tension at all times to prevent it from falling off the crankshaft sprocket.
10. After the new chain has come out of the drive chain cover, while maintaining tension on both branches of the chain, remove the old chain from the new one.
11. Install a new chain on the camshaft sprocket and connect with the chain link inserted from the rear of the sprocket.
12. Install the fixing plate on the connecting link of the chain and rivet it. When riveting, support the connecting link of the chain from the back side with a large hammer. Be careful not to damage the chain or camshaft sprocket.
13. After riveting the connecting link of the chain, check that there are no metal burrs left on it.
14. Install the chain tensioner.
15. Turning the engine crankshaft clockwise, set the piston of the first cylinder to the top dead center and check that all the alignment marks are aligned with the pointers.
16. Install the radiator fan and shroud.
17. Install fuel injectors.
18. Connect ground wire to battery.
