2. On most models, the alternator can be removed from the engine compartment upwards without lifting the vehicle. On certain highly equipped models, due to the size of the engine and the large number of attachments, the alternator must be removed from underneath the vehicle.
Removing
3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Raise the front of the car with a jack and place it on jack stands (see "Lifting the vehicle and placing it on stands").
4. Where provided, remove the motor guard as described in Chapter 11. If necessary, to improve access, also remove the air tube - refer to Chapter 4.
5. Remove the accessory drive belt as described in Chapter 1.
6. On models with a conventional generator, remove the four bolts and remove the rear cover of the generator. Unfasten the spring latch and disconnect the plug from the multi-pin connector (see fig. 5.6).

7. On models equipped with "compact" generator, separate the rubber boot, unscrew the nuts and disconnect the generator wires from the terminals (see fig. 5.7).

8. Loosen and unscrew first the lower, then the upper mounting bolts and remove the generator from the support bracket (see fig. 5.8).

9. If brush holder/voltage regulator removal is required, contact paragraph 6.
Installation
10. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Talk to Chapter 1 for information on how to install and tension the accessory drive belt.
