All models are equipped with disc brakes front and rear. Anti-lock wheel braking system (ABS) fitted as standard equipment on late models and offered as an option on some early models (refer to the relevant paragraph for information).
Note: On models equipped with electronic road traction control (ASR) this function is also performed by ABS. The front disc brakes on all models covered in this manual are actuated by a sliding single piston caliper. This design ensures that the same pressure is applied to each pad.
On all models, the rear disc brakes are actuated by a fixed cylinder with opposite pistons. The parking brake provides independent. mechanical actuation of the rear brakes. A drum and pads are installed in the center of each brake disc. The parking brake is actuated by a lever, which in turn actuates the pads using two cables.
Note: When working on any part of the brake system, proceed carefully and methodically. When disassembling any part of the hydraulic system, observe sterile cleanliness. When in doubt about the condition of parts, always replace them (if possible, a set on the entire axis). Use only genuine Mercedes-Benz parts, or at least parts of proven quality. Be aware of the precautions in section "Safety first!" and in the relevant parts of this chapter dealing with the hazards of asbestos dust and brake fluid.
